What is a Special (Limited) Power of Attorney?
A special or limited power of attorney grants another person (your attorney) authority to act on your behalf for a specific purpose or transaction only — unlike a general power of attorney, which gives broad authority. Once the specified transaction or task is complete, the authority ends automatically.
When Would You Use This?
- Authorizing someone to sell a specific property or vehicle on your behalf while you are away
- Allowing someone to sign closing documents for a real estate transaction
- Granting limited authority to manage a specific bank account or financial transaction
- Appointing someone to represent you in a particular legal or business matter

Click the button below to open a copy in Google Docs. Fill in your personal details and the relevant facts. Once complete, print and sign it in the presence of a notary public — do not sign beforehand. A commissioner of oaths may be used instead of a notary public for some documents, but not all. A notary public can sign all documents.
