A letter of sponsorship — also called an invitation letter — is written by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to support a visitor visa (Temporary Resident Visa) application for a foreign national they are inviting to Canada. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) does not require a sponsorship letter, but visa officers consider it strong supporting evidence of the applicant's genuine intention to visit temporarily.
What it should include
An effective sponsorship letter includes: the sponsor's full name, address, citizenship status, and contact information; the relationship between the sponsor and the applicant; the purpose and planned duration of the visit; a description of accommodation arrangements; a statement about who will bear travel and living expenses; and a declaration that the applicant will leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay.
Supporting documents
The letter is most effective when accompanied by proof of the sponsor's status in Canada, proof of financial means, and documentation of the relationship (photographs, correspondence, family records). The visa applicant should include it with their full application package.
