A notice to vacate from tenant to landlord is a formal written notice given by a tenant to their landlord indicating their intention to end the tenancy and vacate the rental unit on a specified date. Giving proper written notice is an important legal step — ending a tenancy without notice can expose a tenant to liability for rent beyond the date they leave.

Notice periods

Required notice periods vary by province and tenancy type. For month-to-month tenancies, one full rental period (typically one month) is standard in most provinces. For fixed-term leases, a tenant is generally not required to give notice at the end of the term, but many leases include a clause requiring notice. Always check your lease and provincial rules.

What to include

The notice should clearly identify the tenant and landlord, the address of the rental unit, the intended last day of occupancy, a request to confirm receipt, and the tenant's forwarding address for the return of the security deposit.
