A parenting plan is a detailed written agreement between separated or divorced parents that sets out how they will share parenting responsibilities and time with their children going forward. It is one of the most important documents a separating family can create, and Canadian courts strongly encourage parents to develop their own plans rather than relying on litigation.
What a parenting plan should cover
A comprehensive parenting plan addresses: the residential schedule (where the children live day-to-day); holiday and special occasion schedules; how decisions about education, health care, and extracurricular activities will be made; communication protocols between parents; how travel and relocation will be handled; and how disputes will be resolved.
Legal effect
A parenting plan can be filed with the court and incorporated into a consent order, making it legally enforceable. Even if not filed, a written plan signed by both parents creates a clear record of agreed arrangements and significantly reduces the risk of future conflict.
