A statutory declaration of residence is a sworn document confirming your current residential address and the length of time you have lived there. It carries the same legal weight as sworn testimony and is accepted by government agencies, courts, financial institutions, and foreign embassies as proof of address.
Common uses
This declaration is frequently required when applying for provincial health coverage after moving to a new province; when establishing residency for school enrollment or post-secondary tuition rates; when opening bank accounts or applying for credit; and when supporting immigration or visa applications that require proof of Canadian residency.
What it must contain
A valid declaration includes your full name, current civic address (not a PO Box), the date you moved to that address, and your signature witnessed by a Commissioner for Oaths or Notary Public.
