A statutory declaration of support for immigration is a sworn document in which a Canadian citizen or permanent resident formally declares their intention to provide financial and practical support to an immigration applicant. It adds legal weight to an invitation or sponsorship letter by converting it into a sworn statement subject to the penalties of making a false declaration.
When it is used
This declaration is used in family reunification applications, visitor visa applications, and humanitarian applications where an officer needs assurance that the applicant will be financially supported during their time in Canada and will not become a burden on the public system. It is particularly useful when the applicant has limited financial means of their own.
What it must state
The declaration should confirm: the declarant's identity and immigration status; the nature of the relationship with the applicant; the declarant's financial capacity to provide support; the specific support being offered (accommodation, living expenses, medical costs); and the duration of the support commitment.
